It all started about 4 years ago when one of my best friends bought me my first ‘Mac’ lipstick. I wasn’t much of a lipstick kind of girl back then, but that changed very quickly! The one she bought me was ‘Pure Zen’, I wore it every day and I still love it now (I’ve even repurchased it) but I’ve moved away from ‘Cremesheens’ and prefer a ‘Matte’ or ‘Satin’ finish as they are longer lasting and have more pigmentation than the ‘Cremesheen’ formulas. I feel if I wear a strong makeup look, I need to pair it with a strong lip. Whereas for a minimal look, a ‘Chemesheen’ is perfect as it’s a bit of colour with the glossy sheen (perfect in Summer) But as I was someone who was just starting out with a bit of colour but didn’t want anything too obvious, Cremesheens were a brilliant starter Lipstick.
For anyone who doesn’t know, Mac do several finishes to their lipsticks:
- Retro Matte
My first 3-4 lipsticks were all ‘Cremesheens’.
Then I tried the ‘Matte’ formula and I loved the longevity and how it made my lips look a lot fuller. These can make your lips feel a bit dry, but I personally find if you apply a balm underneath then my lips feel hydrated and happy all day.
I also really love the Satin formula but the shade range is really small and I have the few shades that I like.
My Favourite have to be ‘Kinda Sexy’, ‘Please me’, Velvet Teddy, and ‘Honeylove’. These I reach for the most. The rest I wear with a specific look and aren’t so easy just to ‘pop on’. I can’t imagine myself doing the Supermarket shop in ‘Candy Yum Yum’. If you can pull it off, fair play!
Satin formulas do wonders for my lips. They seem to plump them and give them a pouty voluptuous look. I’m drawn to ‘Viva Glam ll’; It’s always in my handbag and works with any look. ‘Myth’, ‘Peachstock’ and ‘Sushi kiss’ are not shades I’d ever wear alone (foundation lips) but they are great for creating an ombre effect by popping in the centre of your lips for extra dimension. ‘Brave’ is another go-to shade as it also goes with any look. ‘Hot Chocolate’ and ‘Captive’ are quite similar and are really rich autumnal shades.
Amplified Lipsticks aren’t a formula I’m keen on, You definitely get the colour pay off but with a bit of a sheen. I don’t find this really does me justice. I love ‘Vegas Volt’, but the other 3 shades above, I don’t really reach for. ‘Dubonnet’ is a gorgeous rich wine red and I wish I wore it more, but ‘Morange’ and ‘Viva Glam MC’ don’t suit me at all.
‘Ruby Woo’, The most gorgeous red, EVER! I love this shade and when I’m feeling my inner ‘Audrey Hepburn’ coming out, I whack this on and feel on top of the world. Something about a red Lipstick that oozes confidence. Often people say that ‘Retro Mattes’ are super drying but I don’t find this with this one; a good balm underneath and it’s absolutely fine.
Flamingo and Costa Chic are shades that I reach for in the summer when I’ve got a nice glow, They don’t work well for me in Winter.
‘Tanarama’ is NOT a shade I’d ever wear alone! I use this as a topper and it’s really pretty. You could also use it as a highlighter, It works well for that too.
I know having 32 lipsticks many seem quite excessive, but I haven’t bought them all in one go and I do wear them all (except the few that don’t suit me). Some people collect other things, I collect ‘Mac Lipsticks’.
Hope you enjoyed this post. Leave me a comment down below and tell me what your favourite lipstick from ‘Mac’ is.
